Lumbarda

board

Lumbarda, a small village surrounded by stone and sea occupies the easternmost cape of the island of KorĨula. It has always been attracting many with its unique beauty. Today, this is witnessed by stone monuments scattered in the landscape reminding us of long lasting coexistence between man and nature. One of them takes us to 3rd century BC, when Greeks from the island of Issa (now Vis) built and organised their community on this shore. The Psephisma from Lumbarda, carved on a stone tablet, records the foundation of a Greek colony in the 3rd century B.C. It sets out the division of the land between Greek colonists and the Illyrian inhabitants on the territory of the present Lumbarda. Its text opens as follows:

“Good fortune! Under Hieromnamonos Praxidamos, in the month of Mahaneos, this contract on the foundation of the settlement was agreed between the Issaean founders and Pyllos and his son Dazos. This was signed by the settlement’s founders, and agreed by the Popular Assembly...”
